Brainscore – lecture by Janez Janša
Janez Janša is contemporary artist who in 2007 changed his name (born in Bergamo, Italy, as Davide Grassi) to Janez Janša, the name of the Slovenian right-wing politician Janez Janša. He is a conceptual artist, performer and producer graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Milan, Italy. His work has a strong social connotation and is characterized by an inter-media approach. He is co-founder and director of Aksioma – Institute for Contemporary Art, Ljubljana. Parallelly to these socio-political projects Janša investigated the field of Virtual Reality and neurofeedback technologies.
Brainscore is a performance for two operators, which act in a virtual reality environment through their avatars. It is the first of its kind to attempt to completely avoid physical participation of operators in the management of avatars. The task is achieved by triggering command on a console through a system based on operator’s brain waves signals (neurofeedback technology) and an eye movement tracking system. The aim of the performance is to create a controlled flow of information in terms of audio-visual messages in order to establish communication with the audience.
