Rijeka 2010
The mysterious monolith placed in front of the city chambers in Rijeka marks the beginning of a new multi-week event organised by PEEK&POKE. The iron, 400 kg monolith with is a clear reference to the inspiration for the event – Arthur C. Clark’s quadrilogy Space Odyssey. The proportions of the monoliths are in the precise ratio of 1 : 4 : 9 (or 12 : 22 : 32) and therefore the work of intelligent life. It is suggested in the 2001 novel that this number series does not stop at three dimensions and the monolith is dated to about four million years old.
The monolith symbolises new beginnings, awakening intelligence, evolution, technological advancement, peace and tolerance. It will stay proudly on Korzo, the main Rijeka’s promenade, for a month after which it will be donated to the University of Rijeka for future generations to draw inspiration from. Two of the most attractive events included in this program are concerts by Perpetuum Jazzile and Tesla Coil Orchestra.
